Modern Birthstones

There have been many different sets of birthstones used throughout history and in different cultures.  From the time gemstones were discovered, they were believed to have mystical powers and attributes that could be passed to the wearer.  About 2000 years ago, writers began pairing each of the stones and their attributes with the months of the year and the signs of the Zodiac.  In 1912, in an effort to standardize them, the National Association of Jewelers, Jewelers of America, officially adopted the following list.  This is currently the most widely used list in the United States and other locations, including Australia and Thailand. Some alternates have been adopted to be a less expensive substitute for a cut stone.
